We went back to witness the yellow eyed penguins return to their nest. There is only 5 of them that call this their home. We were lucky enough on our two trips to see 4 of them. The number of nests this year in NZ are down nearly 50% from the last year. This penguin is a mid sized variety 24-31 inches tall, and weighing 12-18 pounds. They nest in shrubs, flax, and gullies that face the sea. There is only 4000 left and thus is the rarest penguin.
We also saw a squawking mother bird, a variable oystercatcher with two chicks that kept crawling under their mother for protection. Hard to believe that in 6 or 7 months these babies will be flying with there mother.
